Coming up: Television in Kosovo

The Media Program and EUMAP are preparing a major new report on broadcasting in Kosovo. This will extend the Television across Europe monitoring project, which initially covered 20 countries.

Kosovo, the former Serbian province which declared independence earlier this year, has a unique experience of media development. After NATO occupied the territory in 1999, the international community poured resources into remaking the broadcast sector. As well as giving an account of this experience, the report will analyse current television policy and regulation, assessing the level and quality of independence that have been achieved by Kosovo's broadcasters.

Authored by Vjollca Krasniqi, a civil society activist and lecturer at the University of Prishtina, the report will make recommendations to the government, regulatory bodies, media professionals and activists, and also to the international community. A draft of the report will be discussed in autumn 2008 at a roundtable in Prishtina, where the main stakeholders and media experts in Kosovo will be invited to participate. The report should be published in February 2009.
