TV across Europe: Follow-up Reports 2008

The original set of 'TV Across Europe' reports on 20 countries was released between October 2005 and May 2006, and covered developments up until the summer of 2005. They have become a reference in many countries, being widely used in universities and by policy makers.

Since then, however, there have been major changes in the audiovisual field in many countries, involving significant developments with respect to many of the areas monitored.

EUMAP and the Media Program have therefore published a set of nine country updates of its monitoring on Television across Europe, to cover key developments since the release of the original set of reports. This follow-up monitoring has been undertaken on the basis of an updated version of the initial reporting methodology, and where possible by the country reporters involved in the original monitoring. The nine country reports are complemented by an international overview.

The TV across Europe Follow-up Reports 2008 cover 9 of the 20 countries included in the original monitoring, namely Albania; Bulgaria; the Czech Republic; Italy; Lithuania; Poland; the Republic of Macedonia; Romania; and Slovakia.

These countries were selected because there have been significant changes in the broadcasting landscape that merit follow-up monitoring.

The full publication, as well as all individual country updates and the Overview, are available here as PDF files. The full publication and some of the country reports can also be ordered in hard copy at the EUMAP website.

Also in 2008, EUMAP and the Media Program commissioned monitoring reports on television in Montenegro and Kosovo – entities in South-Eastern Europe that have achieved sovereignty since 2005 - which will complete the original Television across Europe project. The Montenegro report is online now and the Kosovo report will follow in early 2009.

Note: EUMAP will also publish a set of special reports on the impact of new technologies and services, which will significantly expand on the information on contained in the first series of reports in order to take account of recent developments, especially in the field of digitalisation.
