6 June 2008: Television in Lithuania in need of reforms, new report says
Television, the main source of information for citizens, is a pillar of democracy. According to a new report on the situation of television in Lithuania, both public service broadcasting and commercial television in the Baltic state still require reforms in order to offer citizens access to quality information. The report, drafted by a journalist Arturas Racas, is released on 6 June 2008 in Vilnius in cooperation with the Lithuanian Center for Independent Journalism.
23 May 2008: Bulgarian television landscape dominated by business interests, not public interest
Press release: According to Assya Kavrakova, author of a new OSI report on television in Bulgaria, “business interests rather than policy decisions have dominated Bulgarian broadcasting in recent years. As a result, and in spite of EU accession, not much has been achieved since the publication of our 2005 report: public service broadcasting is in dire need of a new regulatory framework on funding, new commercial TV licences are still frozen, and digitalization is still surrounded with uncertainty”.
19 May 2008 - Romanian broadcasting: playground for political and business interests
Press release: There were hopes after the 2004 elections that the end of Social Democratic rule would boost media independence. Instead, a new Open Society Institute report on the situation of television in Romania indicates, Romanian broadcasting remains the playground of media moguls, interested in pursuing their political and business interests rather than producing high-quality, independent and diverse television programmes. The report, released today in Bucharest, is part of the series "Television across Europe: Follow-up Reports 2008".
